Data licensing
What a licence covers, and what it cannot.
The public API is open to every caller under the attribution rules. A licence is for use beyond them: commercial use of Renewable Vision compilations, or redistribution. Terms are agreed after a request has been reviewed.
An upstream licence always stands.
A licence from Renewable Vision covers what Renewable Vision holds the rights to: its compilations, its computed figures and its change history. It cannot override the licence of an upstream publisher, and it cannot grant commercial use of data the publisher released for non-commercial use only.
Datasets with non-commercial upstream terms:

Commercial use of these needs the upstream publisher’s own permission. A request that names them is reviewed for research use only.
What needs no licence
Licence types
Three licences, by use.
Each is scoped to named datasets and a stated use. The scope and the attribution are written into the licence.
Research
- Scope
- Non-commercial research, teaching and publication by a named institution or team, including bulk access beyond the API limits.
- Attribution
- The publisher and Renewable Vision, in every publication that uses the data.
- Does not cover
- Commercial use, and redistribution of the data itself.
Internal commercial use
- Scope
- Use inside one organisation for analysis, decisions and internal reporting, by named users or systems, with a licensed key sized to the use.
- Attribution
- In any output shared outside the organisation.
- Does not cover
- Datasets with non-commercial upstream terms, and making the data available to anyone outside the organisation.
Redistribution
- Scope
- Including named datasets in a product, service or dataset delivered to third parties, through the channels the licence names.
- Attribution
- Carried with the data to every recipient, together with the upstream publisher’s attribution.
- Does not cover
- Datasets whose upstream terms forbid it, and any dataset the licence does not name.

Upstream licences
The licence behind every dataset.

What a licence can cover, by upstream licence
- CC BY-NC 4.0
- Non-commercial upstream terms. A Renewable Vision licence cannot permit commercial use of these datasets; only the upstream publisher can. Research use with attribution to both publishers is possible.Non-commercial upstream
- CC BY 4.0
- Commercial use is permitted upstream with attribution. A licence covers the Renewable Vision compilation; the upstream attribution travels with every copy.
- Compiled in house
- Compiled by Renewable Vision from the publishers named. A licence covers the compilation; the publishers’ own terms for their underlying material still apply.
- Publisher open data
- The publisher’s open-data terms govern the data itself. A licence covers only what Renewable Vision adds: the mirror’s structure and its change history.
- Per series
- Each series keeps its publisher’s licence, returned in the licence field of /api/data/portal/{series}. A licence cannot widen it; a series whose publisher restricts commercial use stays restricted.
- Open-Meteo terms
- The forecast inputs come from Open-Meteo, whose terms separate non-commercial from commercial use. The outlook is not included in a commercial licence.Non-commercial upstream
