Global hydrogen projects and MENA
Maps the global hydrogen project pipeline and then the MENA projects inside it, from NEOM and Yanbu to Oman, the UAE, Egypt and the North African projects. The IEA's June 2026 inventory holds 2,934 project-phase records, of which 391 are operational and 213 have reached final investment decision or construction; those are phases and pilots rather than distinct sites, and renewable-power capacity, electrolyser capacity and product output are kept as separate quantities. The regional profiles were reviewed on 19 September 2026, which does not move the date of the global snapshot.

What the report covers
The global hydrogen pipeline is large. Its projects are at very different stages.
The IEA's June 2026 inventory contains 2,934 project-phase records. Of these, 391 are operational and 213 have reached final investment decision or construction.

Throughout the guide, renewable-power capacity, electrolyzer capacity and product output are kept separate. Operating plants, development agreements and project targets are labeled accordingly.
What the figures mean
Quoted from the report's own notes on scope and definitions, in the words it published them in.
- Global counts use the IEA database released on 18 June 2026. Selected regional developer/government disclosures were reviewed on 19 September 2026. A current regional profile does not silently change the historical global snapshot.
- 2,934 project-phase records include pilots, phases, cancelled entries and other stages. They are not 2,934 distinct industrial sites, nor a census of every conventional hydrogen plant.
- 391 records are operational; 213 are FID/construction. The plotted subset is 295 and 197, respectively. All other records remain in the dataset and totals.
- MENA here includes Mauritania and the country codes listed in the extraction script: 178 records, including 6 operational, 7 FID/construction, 138 concept/feasibility, 3 demonstration and 24 inactive records.
- GW/MW of renewable generation and GW/MW of electrolysis are different quantities. Annual hydrogen, ammonia and methanol outputs also remain separate.
- Developer production targets are not replaced with IEA normalized theoretical output. Values in the retained baseline preserve the IEA definitions.
- 331 entries with explicitly random coordinates are excluded from point maps. Remaining IEA coordinates may still be approximate. Selected regional pins are named-area anchors, not plot boundaries; sites without verified locations are not given precise pins.
- Stages are evidence labels, not assessments of eventual success. No announcement is treated as a completed plant or guaranteed delivery.
